Every employee is supposed to earn a minimum wage all over the world in general and in each country in particular. This is the case in Morocco where employees are supposed to receive a minimum wage called SMIG (the Guaranteed Interprofessional Minimum Salary).

SMIG: Definition
Known as the acronym for the word Guaranteed Minimum Interprofessional Salary. Indeed, it constitutes the smallest hourly amount that has been set by the legal authorities to govern the employee payroll system. Therefore, any employer should always pay their employees taking this factor into account.

Moreover, this rule is valid regardless of the sector of activity in question. Thus, no employer must pay his workers a remuneration lower than the SMIG which is the base.

SMIG 2022: How is it calculated in Morocco?
In Morocco, this income is calculated according to the sector of activity. It is for this reason that there is a specific hourly or daily rate both for the agricultural sector and for the others.

The non-agricultural sector
The calculation of the SMIG in the non-agricultural sectors is done on the basis of an hourly rate of 15,55 Dirhams.

After the various deductions, the net Monthly SMIG is around 2.769,87 Dirhams and is generally never lower than this amount. The amount of the SMIG Morocco 2022 is 2.828,71 Dirhams Gross before the month of September 2022.

The agricultural sector
For the agricultural sector, we rather speak of SMAG or Guaranteed Minimum Agricultural Salary. The SMAG is calculated on the basis of a daily rate of 84,37 Dirhams. In fact, this rate is 84,37 for 30 days of work per month. Thus, the SMAG Morocco 2022 Guaranteed Minimum Agricultural Wage is 2.193,62 Dirhams Gross before September 2022.

The domestic workers sector
The minimum wage for domestic workers is governed by the provisions of Law No. 19-12 relating to the working and employment conditions of domestic workers. Thus, the cash wage of the domestic worker cannot be less than 60% of the legal minimum wage (SMIG) applicable in the sectors of industry, commerce and the liberal professions. According to article 19 of the law n° 19-12, they are not part of the cash salary, the benefits of food and accommodation.

Indeed, the hourly rate used to calculate the salary in this sector is 8,89 Dirhams. Based on 191 hours of work per month. The minimum wage for the domestic workers sector in Morocco in 2022 is 1697,23 Dirhams.

In addition, domestic employees must benefit from social security coverage from their employers.

Increase in the SMIG in 2022 in Morocco
The head of government announced, on Thursday September 1, 2022, an increase with immediate effect of 5% of the SMIG in the sectors of industry, commerce and the liberal professions and of 10% of the SMAG.

To this end, the legal minimum wage (SMIG) for one hour of work for the liberal professions and the sectors of industry and commerce will increase from 14,81 DH per hour to 15,55 DH per hour at from September 2022, and from 15,55 DH to 16,29 DH per hour from September 2023.

Similarly, the legal minimum wage for a day's work in the agricultural sector will be 84,37 DH instead of 76,70 DH, from September 2022. Then 88,58 DH instead of 84,37 .2023 DH from September XNUMX.

The measures recorded in the increase agreement

For the public sector:
The SMIG would increase to 3.500 DH net per month.

For the private sector:
10% increase in the minimum wage, in two stages: 5% in September 2022 and 5% in September 2023.
Revision of the condition of the number of days to benefit from the retirement pension from 3.240 days of affiliation to 1.320 days.
Allow policyholders who have reached the legal retirement age, with less than 1.320 days of membership, to recover their contributions and those of their employer.
Support by the State of the financial cost generated by the correction of the reference salaries for the calculation of the pension of future retirees whose income has been impacted by the pandemic;
Increase in family allowances for the fourth, fifth and sixth child in the private and public sector. In addition, the State promises to offer an offer, the costs of which it will assume, helping to reduce the wage cost of domestic workers for their employers.
